Job Description

Scales and Tails Exotic Pet store/Educational Center is offering an exciting internship opportunity with the Aquarium/ herpetology team. Interns will work with aquarist and keepers to gain experience on all aspects of animal husbandry as it relates to the animal’s physiological and psychological well-being, and for the general maintenance of enclosures, habitats, and aquariums. Essential Functions:

Assists Keepers and Team leads with the daily husbandry of assigned animals.

Facilitates formal and informal public presentations to engage guests and provide a positive guest experience.

Actively observes animals’ behavior.

Prepares daily diets and maintains accurate records of assigned animals.

Appropriately cleans/disinfects assigned animal enclosures/habitats according to written protocols and supported by keepers and team leads.

Completes a special project covering observations, research, enrichment or another area of interest.

Program Overview

If selected, the candidates are will be scheduled 10-19 hours per week and the program spans 10-12 weeks. Some travel may be required. Start and end dates are flexible.


All applicants must have completed their 1st year at an accredited college or university and include a resume and cover letter as one document with their application.


Work Environment:While performing the duties, the intern frequently works in outside weather conditions. The intern is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, chemicals and vibration.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to lift at least 50 lbs.

Ability to work in environmental conditions

Ability to stand for long periods of time

Ability to climb stairs, kneel, and squat


General Requirements:

Must have the ability to work independently and be self-motivated.

Prefer candidates that are pursuing a degree in a Biology related field.

Must commit to a schedule.

Must pass a background check

Must have valid drivers license

May be subject to random drug screening

Must have strong communication skills and be comfortable engaging a diverse audience.

Willingness to work weekends, irregular hours and be available based on special needs/circumstances.
